Why This Is the Dog Walking Coat I Reach For Every Winter

I spend a lot of time outside in winter, mostly walking dogs. Not brisk, energetic walks either — more the slow, stop-start kind where you’re standing around chatting, waiting, or dealing with muddy paws. Over the years I’ve owned plenty of coats, and most of them have been fine… but never quite right.

The usual problems crop up quickly. Coats that look waterproof but soak through in real rain. Ones that are warm when you’re moving, but cold the moment you stop. Or coats that are simply too short, letting wind and damp creep in around your legs just when you want to stay comfortable.

Standing still is the real test

What I’ve realised is that dog walking isn’t really about walking — it’s about standing around outdoors in bad weather. That’s where most coats fall down.

The coat I wear now is long, fleece-lined, and genuinely waterproof, and that combination has made more difference than I expected. The length means I stay warm even when I’m not moving, and the fleece lining keeps the cold out without feeling bulky or restrictive.

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the colour or the style — it was that I stopped thinking about the weather altogether.

Practical details you notice over time

It’s only after wearing something regularly that the practical details start to matter. Deep pockets that actually keep your hands warm. Zips that don’t feel fiddly when you’re wearing gloves. Enough room underneath to layer up on colder days without feeling swamped.

I also appreciate that it’s easy to move in. Side zips make a difference when you’re stepping over gates or uneven ground, and the fit is relaxed enough to feel comfortable without looking oversized.

One coat, lots of different uses

Although I bought it for dog walking, it’s become the coat I reach for whenever I know I’ll be outside for a while — standing at the side of a pitch, watching outdoor sport, or just being out and about on cold, wet days.

It doesn’t feel precious. It’s practical, reliable, and does exactly what it says it will do.

Would I recommend it?

If you spend a lot of time outdoors in winter — especially if you walk dogs regularly — I would. A long, waterproof, fleece-lined coat makes far more difference than I ever expected, particularly when the weather is properly British.

I didn’t buy it to make a statement. I bought it to stay warm and dry. And that’s exactly what it does.

If you’re looking for a winter dog walking coat that’s practical, comfortable and built for real outdoor use, it’s worth taking a look at the Hector & George range.
